Father Samuel Mazzuchelli

Father Samuel Mazzuchelli founded the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. Born and baptized in Milan, Italy in 1806, he arrived in the United States at the age of 22 and was ordained a priest two years later.
After his ordination, Father Samuel was sent to Mackinaw Island and later, the northern part of Wisconsin. Much of his work from then on would be in Wisconsin and surrounding states. He worked extensively in what would eventually be the diocese of Madison, designing and founding several churches and civic buildings.
In 1847, he founded the Sinsinawa Dominican sisters. He continued his work of service to his community, and he died surrounded by the Sisters in 1864, after falling ill from pneumonia he caught after attending to a dying parishioner in the bitter cold.
His service to his community reached people of different races, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds. His gentleness and understanding brought a love that now has him recognized as a Venerable. He is currently on the path to beatification, with the hope being his eventual canonization.
